For parents like Sam, Acorns is a critical part of their lives, stepping in to support them at a time when there was nowhere else to turn.
Alex is a cheeky and affectionate four-year-old – he loves frogs and frog noises and enjoys watching the neighbourhood dogs going for a walk. He has Smith Lemli Opitz Syndrome, a rare genetic condition, that affects the organs and can cause severe intellectual and behavioural difficulties.
When she was referred to Acorns, mum Sam had been going weeks without proper sleep, juggling home life, caring for Alex and looking after young daughter Elisabeth. Now Acorns is an important part of the family:
“Acorns has helped me in all aspects; emotionally, physically and mentally. They got involved when I was at my absolute lowest and was physically and mentally exhausted. I didn’t know how much longer I would have been able to live like that. They literally lifted me up from rock bottom.” Sam, Alex’s Mum.
An ever-increasing need
The demand for Acorns Children’s Hospice care has never been greater, with the number of children with life limiting and life threatening conditions rising by 56 per cent in the past 10 years. More children across the West Midlands than ever before are living longer with complex care needs – and that number is expected to continue growing.
Without Acorns, many children like Alex and their families would be facing the unimaginable completely alone. Thank you for helping Acorns to be there for them when they need it most.
